Petrol or diesel? That is the question

One of the most common questions drivers have regarding your car engine and fuel to be used is which of the options out there on the market best suits your needs.

Because not only should think about saving fuel that can either provide: the characteristics of each fuel and the potential advantages and disadvantages that each can offer both car (in its mechanical operation) and characteristics should be taken into account the pocket of the driver. Also, it is essential to know what will be the basic operation of the vehicle (how far you going to go daily, if you are carrying cargo or not, for example) to have a clear idea of what the engine is ideal.

There are many myths surrounding the use of petrol and diesel in the country is it cheaper diesel? Pollutes more?? Your life is longer? In this article we will clarify some doubts on the operation of each to make the best decision when choosing a vehicle, according to the fuel supply.

Gasoline Engine

Gasoline, a material that is obtained by the distillation of petroleum, was discovered in 1857. Three years later, Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir developed the first internal combustion engine burning gas in a cylinder, but only until 1876 is that Nikolaus August Otto built the first gasoline engine, the base is now manufactured for modern cars.

The gasoline engine works through the inlet air to the cylinders and spark plugs creating a spark that combusts and produces an explosion causing the energy generated is transformed into mechanical energy.

The petrol engine is the most common in USA car thanks to the advantages it offers regarding their performance and durability. It also has low pollution characteristics of the environment and has the ability to spin faster, which helps make it a very even engine in terms of strength and power.

Another advantage is that they are quieter, refined, quick and easy to repair engines.

The most obvious disadvantage that can be named is undoubtedly the price of gasoline in our country, even as it was declared as the fourth side of the continent.

Diesel engine

The Diesel or diesel fuel (oil or motor fuel) was invented by German scientist Rudolph Christian Karl Diesel in 1892. The first engines designed for it using vegetable oil (also called biodiesel) other than petroleum, called petro diesel.

In the diesel engine, the air enters the intake valves to the cylinders as in a gasoline engine. Has no spark (as the gasoline engine) but that is turned by the ignition. Fuel is injected into the top of the combustion chamber at high pressure from a nozzle having orifices so that is atomized and mixed with air at high temperature and pressure (700 to 900 ° C). As a result, the mixture is ignited very quickly. This combustion causes the gas contained in the chamber to expand, driving the piston down.

The diesel cycle exists in 4-stroke (4T – applications road land vehicles like cars, trucks and buses) and 2-stroke (2T – large motors for traction, ship propulsion, and some trucks and buses in USA).

Within its mechanical properties, the diesel engine is heavier than your pair of gasoline; their element is much larger to achieve a higher compression ratio than gasoline engines and requires more effort to move and is reserved for trucks and public transport, which are engines that generate more force or torque and average power.

But the above is not definitive. Previously, it was believed that diesel engines were reserved exclusively for large cars such as trucks or buses. But now, thanks to advances in technology, you can find cars with this engine. In USA, for example, 4×4 cars imposed on diesel, with its saving properties that provide the driver.

Among the disadvantages is the diesel engine that has increased torque capacity, but is less potent. Also, less reaction is accelerated and although it requires fewer repairs than a petrol engine, when repair is more expensive than the last. Furthermore, it is definitely louder, despite efforts to avoid this annoying situation.

Also, talk, and rightly so, of the poor quality of diesel in Colombia. This makes much fear that this fuel affects the performance of your engine in the long term. To mitigate this effect, government and private authorities are making efforts to improve their quality and equip it with the developed countries.

Definitely, the differences between a gasoline engine and diesel shorten over time. Technological advances mean that quality and efficiency are on a par, leading to everyday cars with a more powerful and more environmentally friendly engines. Up to you to choose the vehicle with the engine that best suits your needs.
