Car oil change

Choosing the most appropriate engine oil and replacing it in time makes the engine happy and will prolong lifespan. In this way we can enjoy my performance.

Maintenance involves personal car and timely change fluids with which it works.

The best and most impartial advisor in this issue is maintenance manual that was handed to us from buying the car. If I lose or if I received from the agency or from the former owner, we can download it for free from the manufacturer’s website. It is good to carry with us in order to acquire the appropriate spare parts, whenever appropriate.

  1. When you change the engine oil?

In the book of car maintenance is stated that the number of kilometers for oil changes.

There are other situations in which this should be done:

  • If the engine oil changed characteristics, being dark, or if it deposits, darker particles;
  • If the last exchange I used inferior quality oil, whose specifications indicate less time use;
  • If we find small car under greasy or if the oil filter mechanical deformations, a sign that it was damaged;
  • If the car stayed unguided long time (one or more years): engine oil may deteriorate, losing their technical characteristics;
  • If I just purchased a used car, even if the former owner says barely changed (usually all say so).

  1. What oil to choose?

Manufacturers have launched a wide range of engine oils, but not any of these is suitable car that you drive. You should check book maintenance car, choose one with the features recommended by the manufacturer. If we cannot do this, we can see the seller of auto parts, but will have to provide some information contained in the registration certificate.

There are synthetic and semisynthetic: premiums – usually – a longer period of use.

The manufacturer itself indicates several types of oil for the proper functioning of the same engine. For example, a oil, engine works well at temperatures below 10 ° C, and the other one, under the same engine operating from -30 ° C to 40 ° C.

There are various classifications of types of engine oil after the performance, viscosity, and catalyst compatibility with foaming index: ACEA (the name means the European Automobile Manufacturers Association), API (American Petroleum Institute), etc.

Bought on the product label contains information on:

  1. The quantity (you must know how many liters of oil fit into your engine: the information is contained in the user manual);
  2. the brand and type;
  3. SAE classes:
    1. Winter class (0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W);
    2. Summer classes (20, 30, 40, 50.60);
    3. If engine oil meets the requirements of a single viscosity grades, oil is called monograde.

Multigrade oil is the oil that meets the requirements of several viscosity grades. For example, an 10W-40 oil will ensure a cold start like a grade of 10W oil and will behave at high temperatures as oil class 40.

It is best to choose multigrade oil, because, usually, you don’t change the oil every season.)

  1. ACEA and API performance level;
  2. the composition (based on mineral or synthetic oil, additives, etc.);
  3. other information.

Buying engine oil involves purchasing a new oil filter. To ease election, many manufacturers indicate on the package car models which are recommended.

  1. How to change the engine oil?

Replacing the engine oil and oil filter is not a complicated operation and – at least theoretically – could be done by each of us. We do not want to do studies on resistance of the materials made our engine; therefore, we will not pour cold oil in the engine hot!

We offer several options:

  1. a workshop (in many cases they even sell certain types of oil);
  2. A branch of auto parts vendor (many auto parts stores offer free oil change purchased);
  3. A known person without qualifications in the field.

It is better to choose one of the first two options because it avoids many problems and solve the problem of collecting used oil.

To change the oil, proceed as follows: We expect the engine to cool, and then place a collection container under the car. Remove the lid from the top of the engine; remove the cap from the bottom and the old filter. It is expected that the used oil to drain, then mounted in the lower cap and new filter. After that, pour new oil and screwed the top cover of the oil sump.

After many oil changes, we should wash the engine, before introducing the new oil. This is done in service with dedicated substances.

  1. What should we do after replacing oil?

It is good that after oil was replaced not the driving force. Ideally, wait a few minutes, then give the key and wait a while standing still at idle. In this way, we offer him the chance to be wrong, giving new oil barrier protection. If the engine has been washed, this period is better to take half an hour.

The day before we climb behind the wheel, raise the hood, remove the dipstick, wipe with a clean napkin, and then introduce it in place. We should note that the oil is between the MIN and MAX marked the dipstick. The operation is carried out with car stopped on a horizontal surface (if inclined, the information that we obtain in this manner is false).

It is good to cling tags that day I did make a record and oil exchange index that indicates it out (in many service stations, the mechanic does this).

Before we get in the car, look under it: a greasy stain may indicate a faulty gasket or wrong oil filter assembly.
