10 basic car cares for autumn

October is the ideal time to perform the basic car care before the arrival of the rainy and cold months

The basic care of the car is the best guarantee for its good operation. Car Care Council recommends performing 10 maintenance procedures during Your Car’s Autumnal Month so your vehicle is in top condition before winter arrives:

  1. Check all fluids. These include engine oil, power steering, brakes and transmission, plus windshield wiper and antifreeze.

  1. Check hoses and belts. Make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, lose or worn.

  1. Inspect the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure that the connection is clean, tight and free from corrosion.

  1. Check the brake system. Do this every year and have the linings, rotors, and brake drums inspected each time the oil is changed.

  1. Inspect the exhaust system. Detect for leaks or damages, as well as broken supports or suspenders in case of any unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

  1. Check the motor. It serves to ensure that it is performing the best balance between power and fuel economy and producing the lowest level of emissions possible.

  1. Test the heating and air conditioning system. The correct operation of the heating and the air conditioning are fundamental for the comfort and security inside the vehicle.

  1. Inspect steering and suspension system. Do this annually, including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts, such as ball joints, steering rods, and other related components.

  1. Check the tires. Include tire pressure and tread. The uneven wear of the wheels indicates that wheel alignment is required. Tires should also be checked to make sure there are no protrusions and worn areas.

  1. Check wipers and lighting. Check that all interior and exterior lighting are working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving in the rain.
